July 26, 2010

This date marks the official handover of the Crescent Beach Centre to the Town of Lockeport. The Beach Centre was originally built and administered by the Crescent Beach Development Association, a non-profit and entirely volunteer organization. The current Board of Directors would like to acknowlege the supreme efforts of all the volunteers over the years who made it possible for the Centre to exist. It has been an unhill battle to keep the Centre maintained and operating, and would have been unimaginable without the support of the Town of Lockeport, the Municipality of Shelburne, and the contributions of local businesses and private benefactors. Thank you all!

The future of the Crescent Beach Centre now rests in the very capable hands of the Town of Lockeport (and that means the people of Lockeport). Drop by the Centre, check out the new VIsitor Informaiton Centre, explore the Arts and Crafts on display, or use the C@P computer. Join the Ragged Islands Artisans on Wednesdays between 10 am and 1 pm and don't forget to bring your knitting or other craft project. Join our new art group to practice your painting and drawing. Or, start your own group! The Centre offers a unique venue, full of natural light and creative energy.

CRESCENT BEACH PaintOut 2010

Thank you to the many and very generous sponsors of the PaintOut. We had an enthusiastic turnout, most notably for Lio Lo's watercolour workshop (apologies to those we had to turn away). Our condolences to a very disappointed Gay McNeil, whose broken arm really limited her participation (as you can imagine).

The reception on Sunday was well attended and the successful buyers went home with some impressive works of art. Congratulations to 13 year old Claire Haliburton, the artist who contributed the first piece sold during the exhibition. Other artists participating included Mary Brownless from Lunenburg, Rod Mackay from Mahone Bay, Gretchen Markle of Shelburne, Lorraine Donati of Sandy Point, Lio Lo of Jordan Falls and Jana Traff and Kim Muller-Thym, both from Allendale.

The chowder luncheon on Saturday was very popular and the Ragged Islands Historical Society put on a delicious spread. Luckily there was enough to go around.

Thanks also go out to Ashley Stuart, our student coordinator, who was able to spend her summer working on this event thanks to a grant from Canada Summer Jobs.

Ragged Islands Artisans

The Ragged Islands Artisans meet at the Centre every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our members are primarily knitters but you may also see us rug hooking, quilting, spinning or any craft you can imagine. Come and join us! It's a great place to perfect your skills or learn a new one. The cost is $3 and there is coffee and tea available at a cost of $0.50. During the winter months we meet upstairs in the Observation Deck (the light is fantastic!) and entry to the building is through the side door. We look forward to meeting you there soon!

Ragged Islands Historical Society

The Crescent Beach Centre is the new home of the Ragged Islands Historical Society.

Join us on Saturday, June 18th from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. as the members of the Ragged Islands Artisans get together for a day of knitting. Bring your knitting or just stop in to say "Hi!" There will be Knitting Demonstrations during the day, and Door Prizes to be won. This event is part of a international initiative to encourage knitting as a social activity: "Better Living Through Stitching Together". To learn more, visit http://www.wwkipday.com/

The members of our group are working on individual projects and are preparing for our exhibition 'Art & Knitting: Purls of the Deep' at The Osprey in November. Refreshments will be available; and feel free to bring your lunch. If the weather is nice we hope to be outside, so you may also want to bring your sunhat and your favourite folding chair. Hope to see you there!
